Card of the Month The Four of Swords

In my last blog I shared my 2025 Year Ahead reading.

My card for January is 2025 the 4 of Swords.

The Heartwood Tarot

In this Blog I share my thoughts & tips to a restful midwinter inspired by my card for January - The 4 of Swords.

As we welcome the new year, the Four of Swords card reminds us of the importance of rest and renewal. If you’re into all those Christmas shenanigans (and identify as a woman) you will have been the creator of festive magic. Orchestrating all the things from gatherings, gifts and glorious feasts.

In a society that often glorifies this busyness, taking time to pause and recharge is a radical act of self-care.

Now don’t shrink at the phrase self-care. The dominant narrative which I am sick of is adding in all these extra things to do – meditate/ yoga/ gym/ diet etc etc etc

I am rebelling against that narrative starting this month!

Let's explore how the 4 of swords teaches us to create space for quietness and stillness, and why it's essential for our well-being.

The Power of Rest:

Rest is not just about physical relaxation; it's a holistic practice that nurtures our mind, body, and spirit. When we allow ourselves to rest, we create the opportunity for healing, reflection, and growth. It's in these moments of stillness that we can gain clarity, set intentions, and align with our true purpose.

Is it just me or do your best ideas, solutions to problems or ways to hold a conversation pop in when you just give yourself some space and time to ponder?

Practical Tips for Embracing Rest which DON’T add to your ‘to do list’:

Sleep more: It’s the season of darkness. Go to bed. Nap. Grab a blanket and allow yourself a snooze. My bedtime reminder has been set to 9pm this month. By Feb I hope to have slept for an additional 46 hours.

Limit Screen Time: Use the technology to set a sleep mode/ limit your social media time or use reminders to really keep you accountable. My instagram limit is 30mins per day this month!

Set Boundaries: Say no to activities or commitments that drain your energy. I am saying no to supermarket shopping this month. I will click and collect or my husband will go. Simples.

Embrace Silence: There is too much noise. Listen to the birdsong, the wind through the trees or your cat purring.

This month, to me, the 4 of swords is permission to do nothing

Now I know that’s not possible all the time.

But would you be willing to set a 1 minute timer right now and sit in silence with me?

How did that feel? What came up for you?

Starting the year with rest and renewal sets a powerful tone for the months ahead. By embracing the wisdom of the Four of Swords, you can cultivate a sense of tranquility and purpose that will guide you through the challenges and opportunities of the year.

Let's make January a month of intentional rest and rejuvenation.
